6 Ausgabe Februar 2016 BUG Windowsills Processing guidelines In case of replacement assemblies, the suitability of already used profiles and system components has to be checked. The cut to length of the profile shall be performed with a saw blade made of hard metal. When specifying the profile length the thermal expansion of aluminum must be considered. The change in length is approx. 1.2 mm/m at 50 °C temperature difference. At surface finished windowsills off-cut of approx. 30-50 mm should be considered due to the suspension bores for the surface treatment Windowsills with total or single length of more than 3 m must be separated and connected by a butt joint. When using butt connectors, length expansion on both sides of 4 mm each is to be taken into account and a second water-draining level produced with a trough-shaped sealing film under the windowsill. At outreaches of more than 150 mm special anchors at the underside must be provided in order to achieve stabilisation for positional stability (wind and suction load). The distances are based on the tables of the above-mentioned directives and recommendations. In accordance with our recommendation, the distance from the lateral end pieces should be approx. 40 cm and the distance from holder to holder approx. 60 cm. Accessible and walkable windowsills require special sub-structures and are to be planned and constructed in accordance with the building construction. Put-on end seals must be sealed with common mastic sealant prior to fixing. At windowsill, which are plastered in, a strain gage must be bonded to the face and upper side (see drawing, page 10 in this brochure). At windowsill sliding end seals temperature depending expansions will be compensated by integrated mounting end stops or spring elements due to a space in the end seal by design. If an anti-drumming coating is required, 1/3 of the windowsill underside is to be coated with antidrumming material over the whole length (minus any existing clamping bars in the case of butt connectors or windowsill ends) in accordance with the directives. This is to be positioned in such a way that it is no longer visible when installed. Free to combine strips are available from us in widths of 50 and 80 mm. Other sizes must be specially agreed upon. For fixing the windowsill screws of A2 quality with plastic washer must be used. The connection of the windowsills to the windows must be designed flush and able to slide with suitable sealing systems (e.g. pre-fabricated sealing profile of the windowsill system). During installation of the windowsills it should be observed that the drainage slope of 5° is still ensured after installation. Rough mortar or plaster residues must be removed immediately. This applies as well for foil protected surfaces. The factory supplied protective foil should not remain on the installed windowsills at site for more than 3 months. Assembly on the building site Assembly and sealing on the structure must be carried out according to the standards and approved guidelines. Protection during the assembly and construction period During the assembly and construction period the aluminium elements are often exposed to mechanical and chemical impacts. Already small scratches impair the surface and should be avoided. Lime and cement splashes cause light spots and possibly corrosion attack. Alkaline pollutions must therefore be immediately removed, because in case of longer impact it will not be possible any more to remove the damages on the building site. If aluminium profiles are installed prior to plastering, then measures should be taken by means of which the aluminium is sufficiently protected. Cleaning of surface-refined components We recommend basic cleaning after assembly of the components as well as cleaning intervals according to the relevant environmental impact. Anodised surfaces are cleaned by washing them off using warm water. In order to support the cleaning effect, chlorine-free surface-active agents can be added to the water. In case of strongly soiled surfaces, it is recommended to use special anodic cleaning agents. Coated surfaces can also be washed off using warm water. Here too, surface-active agents can be added to the water in order to support the cleaning effect. After using surface-active agent containing cleaning agents, rinse well using clear water. In case of strongly soiled surfaces, abrasive cleaners must not be used. Paint cleaning agents and paint polishes which are offered for cleaning passenger vehicles are suitable, however. Application may take place according to the recommendations of care agent manufacturers.
